Master the Mountain Diary Entry #3

Week three...

Wow have we been here 3 weeks already?  I can't believe that I have only known this group/possy/crew/gang of peeps of only 3 weeks, it feels like we’re all old friends!  I also can't believe that 3 weeks is already over, this means we are already half way.  Fernie has a funny time thing going on: It feels like home away home and yet it also feels like we arrived yesterday. Time is flying.  It must be because we're having fun'!!!!
Master the Mountain on snow

So what's been happening?  Lessons Monday to Thursday, time on the mountain, it’s far to easy to feel like this should be the norm for life – an office on the mountain.

That Friday feeling usually starts on Thursday night with a few post ski beers in the Griz Bar in Fernie Alpine Resort then down in to town for a spot of dinner at the lodge, a few more beers, onto another bar resulting in a relatively messy walk home from the Brick House (a bar in town) around 2am.

A few of the MTM crew out on the town...

We had Friday morning off the snow, and enjoyed a delicious buffet breakfast consisting of eggs and bacon and then more bacon!  They sure know how to do breakfasts out here in Canada. Then we went up the mountain in attempt to clear our fuzzy heads.

Personally I feel like I learnt a lot this week (with my instructor Dom) because I am feeling good on my skis, very confident and I am pretty impressed with myself.   I am a little ashamed to admit this but I was racing down a run, feeling good and I skied under the chair lift… I stopped and took a look up to see if anyone had seen me! Ha!

Saturday we went ski touring!! This was my first time using touring skis and it’s amazing how steep a slope you can walk up without sliding backwards.  Added to this, it is some of the best exercise that I have done.  There is something really great about earning your turns. At the top we looked down and the slope below us was totally untouched, fresh, light, white powder snow!!!  Everyone in the group had their own line and no one crossed tracks.  It’s an incredible experience.  I think we all have a deeper love and respect for the snow and mountains after that.
