Nonstop Cervinia Ski Camps Story 1

Cervinia, Italy is an authentic mountain town nestled in the Aosta Valley next to the French and Swiss boarders. Cervinia has all the amenities one would expect of a world class European mountain village, including the finest Italian wines, food, fashion, chocolate, pizza (pizza is its own food group in Italy), and of course Italian shoes. In itself this maybe enough reason to visit Cervinia.

There are many experiences in life that get my giggle on, most of them aroused through external stimulus, these external sensations transmit emotions through my body which results in a grin and a giggle, followed by a lot more giggling. The first time I experienced the snow quality on the Zermatt glacier I giggled, I giggled a lot. It took about 3 turns. The snow quality can be so good that your skis just glide with incredible ease, bite with precision rewarding you with clean effortless arcs. This sensation is giggle worthy.

Gaz McGowan has attended many Nonstop camps in Fernie, BC and shares his impressions of the Cervinia Camp....

The Cervinia pre-season camp meant I was able to re-engage with my skiing in a measured way on nicely groomed pistes with some great feedback both verbally and via video that I could take with me on future ski trips. I quickly got used to feeling a good balanced stance and re enabling the muscle memory for skiing. Normally the first couple of days of my first ski trip would be an unplanned approach to getting my “ski legs back”, which tended to be pretty haphazard with mixed success. The course enabled me to focus on the basics and get them right which delivered a great foundation for the oncoming ski season, and also have some fun while we did it. On my next ski trip after the Cervinia camp I felt a lot more confident on snow, and I got into the skiing much quicker and meant I could enjoy it more. I would certainly recommend the course and look forward to attending one again.

Snow conditions and terrain play a significant role in the development and improvement of your skiing. It's important to understand the fundamental differences between developing and improving. Developing is when we are introduced to and acquiring a new skill. Improving is when you are "tweaking" your existing skills, you have consolidated the skill and you are testing it through changing situations, such as an increase in speed, changing turn radius etc. Whether you are developing or improving your skills, Cervnia/Zermatt has two key elements to accelerate your learning. Due to the high elevation (one of the highest in Europe that is accessible in November) the quality of snow remains consistent and with low skier traffic the snow stays grippy throughout the day. The length and gradient of slopes on the glacier serves our purpose exceptionally well. There is a nice variety to the slopes, most importantly many runs are very long with a consistent pitch, critical to developing new motor patterns and creating long term muscle memory. There are also short pitches that are essential when direct feedback and a quick turnaround is required. The slopes are wide open, smooth and predictable, allowing us to focus on our skiing without distraction. The only distraction is the amazing scenery and that constant pat on your back you'll be giving yourself for laying down the sweetest arcs of your life.

Good enough for the best in the world, it's good enough for us. Putting this statement into context: In the off season, World Cup athletes spend time on the glacier to develop and refine their skills, figuring out ways to shave off crucial 100th's of a second. For us, time on the glacier essentially does the same thing and may add to our confidence, desire to have better short turns, a consistent pole plant or more efficient carving. No matter where your development or improvement lies, time on the glacier will benefit your all mountain skiing just as the World Cup athlete transfers their development/ improvement to the race course.
