Jane is on our 11 week instructor program in RED and in this blog tells us about her experience at the Rossland Winter Carnival. Luges, lives music, street parties and a whole lot more! So much going on!
I’d like to say that this week has been all about the skiing, but the Rossland Winter Carnival has been a major highlight. We did, however, have four days consolidating our ski technique before the carnival started. We also learnt how to edge and wax our skis in an evening tech session – super useful skills to have in your locker.
The streets of Rossland packed with carnival goers.
The Winter Carnival in Rossland has been held every year since 1898, making it one of the oldest carnivals in Canada - a fact that most Rosslanders are extremely proud of. This historic event is held over three days at the end of January. Our Nonstop crew volunteered to help at various events held over the weekend. This was a fantastic opportunity for us to meet the locals and feel a part of the community.
So what’s on at the Winter Carnival? Well heaps actually! You can learn to luge up at the ski hill, join a jam session at The Legion, party at the Flying Steam Shovel, watch grown men throw themselves into home crafted luges and hurtle down the main streets, watch rail jams set up in the street, taste an amazing assortment of delicious roadside local food stalls, and enjoy the live music everywhere.
This gut isn't going to crash!
A hill. A kayak. Several grown men. And snow. What could go wrong?
The newly renovated Miners’ Hall hosted an indoor Farmers Market. If you think biking is only for the summer you're wrong, as here at RED they have ‘fat bike racing’ at the carnival and of course a relay race from the top of Red Mountain where you can downhill ski, nordic ski snowshoe, bike or run a special route set up for racing.
Fastest person wins, of course. Heaps of fun for all. The town was packed to the rafters with locals and visitors enjoying Rossland’s genuine hospitality.
A week to remember for sure.
