Full Course Story 4 Weeks in Fernie, Canada

This is a month-long freeride journey into the heart of BC — blending progressive snowboard coaching, backcountry skills, unforgettable experiences, and a crew of like-minded riders. For adventurous intermediate to expert snowboarders, this is your opportunity to master riding in the steep and deep while preparing for your first true backcountry touring adventure.

Based in Fernie, a legendary freeride town in southeast British Columbia, you’ll spend four weeks sharpening your off-piste technique in Fernie’s bowls, trees, and ridgelines. You’ll also take part in avalanche and touring clinics, gear workshops, and optional cat-boarding — all guided by experienced pros. You’ll finish the course with a four-day backcountry mission at the Boulder Hut, a remote lodge deep in the Purcells, only accessible by heli.

This trip isn’t just about snowboarding. It’s about unplugging, reconnecting with the mountains, and riding with purpose. You’ll finish with new skills, lifelong memories, and a crew of people who shared the same lines, climbs, and powder turns. Touring experience isn’t required, just strong intermediate skills and an appetite for adventure.

Here’s a flavour of what your month-long journey in Fernie could look like – expect powder days, backcountry moments, and serious progression.

Welcome to Fernie – your home for the next month and the ultimate base to level up your skiing. We’ll kick off with gear advice to get everything dialled, followed by welcome drinks, dinner and an intro to the crew. Coaching begins on Monday – we’ll ease in, guiding you through Fernie’s iconic five bowls and helping you find your feet. As confidence builds, we’ll start pushing technique – and if conditions align, dip into powder and off-piste. You’ll also get early access with First Tracks, loading lifts before the public and carving fresh lines to start your day. Evenings are for lodge meals, sharing stories, and soaking up Fernie’s mountain town vibe.

Now that the legs are firing and the crew’s dialled in, it’s time to raise the bar. Coaching continues with a deeper dive into Fernie’s more technical terrain – tree runs, steeps, and freeride lines you might’ve dodged a week ago. We’ll build confidence and control through focused coaching, and you’ll start to feel the flow in even the most demanding terrain. One of the week’s major highlights? An optional guided cat-boarding day, chasing untouched powder in one of BC’s best zones. This is the stuff dreams are made of.

By now, you’ll be riding stronger and smarter. This week we’ll keep the coaching momentum rolling while introducing two essential mountain skills clinics – avalanche awareness and touring. We’ll cover peer rescue, terrain analysis, safe travel techniques, and how to use your gear with confidence. You’ll practice skinning, transitions and route planning in areas just beyond the resort boundary like Lost Boys and Mongolia Bowl. It’s all about building the skills and knowledge to travel safely through the backcountry – setting you up perfectly for what comes next.

This is it – your capstone experience. A heli will drop you into the remote Boulder Hut, where you’ll spend four days off-grid ski touring deep in the Purcells. Ride untouched powder by day, eat hearty meals, unplug and unwind by night. This is backcountry immersion at its finest – no distractions, just lines, laughs, and leg burners. After returning to Fernie, you’ll have a few bonus freeski days to soak it all in, lap your favourite zones, and reflect on how far you’ve come. We’ll finish with a final celebration – drinks, hugs, and plans for future missions with your new mountain family.

Fernie is a skier’s dream: raw, rugged and endlessly rideable. Home to five legendary alpine bowls – Cedar, Lizard, Currie, Timber and Siberia – this mountain is built for exploration. Whether you're carving groomers or dropping into steep chutes, Fernie serves up some of the most varied and exciting terrain in North America.

Fernie’s snowfall is the stuff of legend. With an average of 10 metres per season, it’s one of the snowiest resorts in the Rockies – and the quality is just as impressive as the quantity. A combination of the horse-shoe shape of the bowls, local weather systems and Pacific fronts are to thank for Fernie’s frequent dumps and feather-light flakes.

Fernie isn’t your typical purpose-built ski resort – it’s a real-deal mountain town full of soul, character, and community. Tucked into the southeast corner of British Columbia and rooted in mining heritage, Fernie is shaped by powder-loving locals who live for the mountain. When it dumps over 20cm, shops have been known to close – because skiing takes priority. Historic downtown adds to the charm, with indie shops, craft coffee spots, a vintage cinema, and a community that welcomes newcomers like old friends.

Fernie’s nightlife strikes a perfect balance: lively when it wants to be, low-key when you need it. The scene spans live bands at The Northern, cocktails at Fernie Distillers, and open mic nights at The Brickhouse. Après is more relaxed than Europe, but still has a strong pulse. At the base of the hill, the Griz Bar is the go-to hangout – pitchers of Kokanee flow, pool tables stay busy, and the sun deck comes alive in spring.

Coaching runs four days a week, with time for rest, exploration, or solo missions. You’ll ride bowls, trees, steeps, and natural features — all perfect prep for the backcountry. We’ll use video analysis and hands-on feedback to refine your riding, line choice, and fluidity in deep snow.

This course suits a range of adventurous snowboarders from strong intermediate to expert. You’ll be grouped by ability and goals to ensure progression and flow. Group size is 6 per coach, creating a tight-knit dynamic and loads of personalised support.

The coaching team is made up of experienced freeride snowboarders, Level 3+ instructors, and local guides who live and breathe this terrain. You’ll rotate coaches during the course to gain fresh perspectives, techniques, and access to new zones each week.

Your first clinic is a full-day introduction to avalanche safety. You’ll learn to assess terrain, read forecasts, use a transceiver, shovel and probe, and practice real rescue scenarios in the field. It’s essential knowledge for anyone riding off-piste.

The second major clinic focuses on touring and splitboarding fundamentals. You’ll learn how to use skins, climb efficiently, manage gear, transition quickly, and travel safely as a group. It’s the ideal prep for the Boulder Hut finale — and your future touring goals.
